About Us

My name is Heather Stewart. Welcome to this new chapter in my life. When I retired from teaching, I knew I would need something creative to do with my time.  After having some sort of role in education since 1970, planning was deeply rooted in my soul. I decided to marry that skill set with a life long hobby. Knittin’ While Sittin’ was born.

I can barely remember a time when I was not a knitter. I know my mum taught me to knit sometime when I was between six and eight years old. At some point during that time, I also taught myself to crochet. I fell in love with both, and they have always been part of my life’s journey. For those who are counting, that’s more than 50 years of creating with yarns.

Growing up, I was one of those unique kids who had one foot firmly planted in the math and sciences fields while the other one was just as firmly stuck in the humanities and arts fields. I think it was that duality that made me a fan of these handcrafts. I use the creative, arty side of my brain to help me pick patterns, yarns, and colours. I use the ‘mathy’ side to help me design (and redesign) patterns and work out the numbers to ensure I end up with something lovely.

When I was in my fourth year of university, I made my sister a sweater at least twice a month. She finally had to tell me she had no more room in her dresser! I estimate I have knit more than 100 sweaters and crocheted some 200 or more baby blankets. I make socks for everyone, from babies to centenarians, plus hats and mittens, Christmas Stockings, and so much more. I prefer some projects over others, but in general, I am happiest when I am watching sports with yarn in my lap.
